Welcome to the future!
A smart city based on AI systems collects data about a city’s infrastructure and its people. The goal is to improve city functions, efficiency and city life.
In a smart city all the data comes together and is processed in one place represented by the data center in the model. Using machine learning, findings and solutions are formulated intending to optimize the city. But according to which ideal? In the model we present the relationship between four themes: smart systems, smart mobility, smart surveillance and smart environment.

Studio Bas Sala developed the model from scratch - from the first concept to the production of the model. The interactive installation is part of the Artificial Intelligence exhibition shown in:

About the themes:
Smart Systems (Water, Energy, Waste)
Sensors and a central management system control the supply systems in the city. A combination of data collection and analytical cloud computing ensures that facilities are only powered when needed. Smart Rain Barrels, Smart Street Lighting and Smart Waste monitor consumption and maintenance and adapt their function to surrounding conditions.
Sensoren en een centraal beheersysteem zorgen voor slimme controle over de voorzieningssystemen in de stad! Dankzij een geweldige combinatie van dataverzameling en analytische cloudcomputing worden voorzieningen alleen van stroom voorzien wanneer dat echt nodig is. Slimme regentonnen, slimme straatverlichting en slimme afvalcontainers houden niet alleen het verbruik en het onderhoud in de gaten, maar passen ook hun functies aan de omgevingsomstandigheden aan. Een geweldige manier om efficiëntie en duurzaamheid te combineren!
Smart Mobility
Residents share cars or scooters. Parking spots are mapped with sensors. Drones fly automated routes to do deliveries. Smart traffic lights regulate flow according to real-time data. Self-driving cars and busses have their own lanes. The vision: zero emissions, zero accidents, zero ownership.
Bewoners delen moeiteloos auto's, elektrische fietsen of scooters. Parkeerplekken worden slim in kaart gebracht met sensoren, zodat je altijd weet waar je kunt staan. Drones zoeven door de lucht en verzorgen razendsnelle leveringen. Slimme verkeerslichten zorgen voor een perfecte doorstroming dankzij realtime data. Zelfrijdende auto's en bussen hebben hun eigen rijstroken voor een vlotte en veilige rit. De toekomstvisie? Nul uitstoot, nul ongevallen, en geen eigendom meer nodig!
Smart Surveillance
Cameras everywhere: in doorbells, traffic lights, parks, car interiors and more. Not being watched or recorded becomes uncommon in (semi) public spaces. Smart devices track each owner’s every move. Everyone’s data profile is collected and analysed in the data centre and its cloud. The constant surveillance influences people’s behaviour.
Camera’s zijn overal te vinden: in deurbellen, verkeerslichten, parken en zelfs in de auto! Het is bijna vanzelfsprekend dat je in (semi) publieke ruimtes wordt bekeken of wordt opgenomen. Slimme apparaten volgen elke beweging van hun eigenaar en geven je een super gepersonaliseerde ervaring. In het datacentrum en de cloud worden alle profielen verzameld en geanalyseerd, wat nieuwe inzichten oplevert. Deze voortdurende surveillance geeft een nieuwe dynamiek aan hoe mensen zich gedragen!
Smart Environment
Fully automated inner-city greenhouses and farms produce local food. AI systems learn plant behaviour and constantly adjust conditions according to individual needs. Drones fly automated routes to monitor and manage urban green. Parks provide access to public networks and offer data-driven leisure activity programmes.
Volledig geautomatiseerde binnenstedelijke kassen en boerderijen zorgen voor heerlijk vers lokaal voedsel! Slimme AI-systemen begrijpen het gedrag van planten en optimaliseren de groeiomstandigheden op maat. Drones zoemen door de lucht, beheren en bewaken het stedelijk groen met precisie. In parken kun je niet alleen genieten van de natuur, maar ook gebruikmaken van openbare netwerken en meedoen aan spannende, datagestuurde recreatieprogramma’s!
Leaves of privacy 2026
Leaves of Privacy powerfully depicts how vulnerable the individual has become regarding control over privacy in public spaces. In a world where smart, AI-driven algorithms capture virtually every movement, places where you can still be truly anonymous seem to be almost disappearing. Everywhere we are tracked, analyzed, and digitally shaped, both in the physical and the online world.
But what does that mean for us as human beings? Why do we often experience online surveillance as uncomfortable, while we seemingly accept it offline? Or is it the other way around? Have we become desensitized, or is AI forcing us to redefine our norms and values?
Leaves of Privacy 2026 invites reflection: how much freedom do we still experience, and what are we willing to give up for it?
Leaves of privacy Verbeelden op krachtige wijze hoe kwetsbaar het individu is geworden in de controle over privacy in de publieke ruimte. In een wereld waarin slimme, AI-gedreven algoritmes vrijwel elke beweging vastleggen, lijken plekken waar je nog écht anoniem kunt zijn bijna te verdwijnen. Overal worden we gevolgd, geanalyseerd en digitaal gevormd, zowel in de fysieke als in de online wereld.
Maar wat betekent dat voor ons als mens? Waarom ervaren we online surveillance vaak als ongemakkelijk, terwijl we het offline ogenschijnlijk accepteren? Of ligt dat juist andersom? Zijn we afgestompt geraakt, of dwingt AI ons om onze normen en waarden opnieuw te definiëren?
Leaves of Privacy 2026 nodigt uit tot reflectie: hoeveel vrijheid ervaren we nog, en wat zijn we bereid daarvoor op te geven?
