Pop-up bus stop

Pop-up bus stop
In collaboration with Floor van Ditzhuyzen (The Design Workshop) and Sander van der Ham (Stipo) Studio Bas Sala has won the Smart Public Transport Idea competition with the Pop-up bus stop.
POP-UP BUS STOP (PUB)
The Pop-Up bus stop is a temporary bus stop that is placed at diversions, festivals and other temporary stops. It is a striking object in the public space, comparable to a billboard. It offers the possibility to inform about the relocation or to respond to the programming of a festival.
Bus stops are sometimes temporarily moved due to work, festivities, etc. Until now, these temporary, improvised stops consist of a traditional stop post and a temporary platform. This is sin. After all, the “normal” stops in Rotterdam have a high-quality appearance. The pop-up bus stop may not completely prevent the annoyance about the move, but it certainly alleviates the pain. The Pop-Up Bus stop shows information about the reason for the move and the duration. When deployed during festivals, there is room for the festival program, announcements of bands and whatnot. The stop must be easy to place and transport. The costs can be kept to a minimum by integrating the advertisements into the stop. In fact, the PUB is an advertising object, similar to guerrilla advertising tactics such as the Flash-Mob.

Travel through history
Next to the Pop-Up bus stop, the “Journey through history” has been adopted by a public transport company. We will work together on developing the idea into a practically feasible application.
About journey through history:
On the OV Information screen you travel through the history of Rotterdam. Photos of places you pass are interspersed with personal anecdotes and memories of old Rotterdammers.
Rotterdam is a city with a rich history. However, this history cannot always be read from the (built) environment. Photos, videos, facts, trivia questions, memories and important events can be shown on the screens in the bus or tram, making that history visible. By pulling the area into the bus, travelers can get to know the area in a simple way, public transport becomes more attractive for tourists and the stories make the bus line into a special whole. No bus line is the same anymore. For older Rotterdammers it will be a journey of recognition. Young people and tourists are introduced to the history of Rotterdam.

Small public behavior
Our contest entries are arising from the research Waiting is a verb that is being carried out together with Floor van Ditzhuyzen and Sander van der Ham. In it we investigate the positive influence that waiting as a public activity can have on/in public space.
