STUDIO BAS SALA
Studio Bas Sala is a design agency in Rotterdam. Under that name, I design and realize innovative projects in public spaces, products, and interiors. Interactivity and design research play an important role in my work.
The designs invite you to sit, play, think, do nothing, and often evoke a smile. Interdisciplinary collaboration (with professionals and non-professionals) and high-quality products play a central role in our work. I initiated many of my projects myself, focusing not only on the physical design but also on how they are used and how they can have added value other than financial.
Projects initiated by the Studio include the Hefpark in Rotterdam, an adaptive community park, and the redevelopment of the Yellow Building in the Zomerhofkwartier in Rotterdam. A building where makers, doers, and thinkers collaborate around the theme of the city.
I am, of course, a designer and studied Man and Public Space at the Design Academy in Eindhoven. But I do much more than just design. For example, I was the initiator and design coordinator of the Mtic design knowledge exchange program. This is a knowledge exchange program focused on product design, where Dutch designers design products together with Latin American designers and share the knowledge gained in the co-creation process.

Previously, I was a lecturer and Head of the Interior Architecture department at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. I have taught at the HKU in Utrecht and the Academy of Architecture in Rotterdam.
I am a member of both the BNO and the Kunstenbond.
In my autonomous work, I operate alone, but when working on commission, I often do so together with others. This can be in development as well as in execution. People I often collaborate with are:
Jan Melis: Designer
Tina Siehoff: Designer
Lieke van der Meer - Designer / researcher / placemaker
Mara Versteegen: Designer/engineer/placemaker
